Your wedding photography

Your budget will in part dictate your style of wedding photography.

Will it be a friend, will there be cameras on the table, will you use a professional photographer and if so are they experienced in photographing weddings?

If you choose the cameras on the table, be prepared for lots of duplicated shots, lots of missed opportunities and lots of flashing at the same time during key speeches etc.  Plus lots of shots of people taking photographs. Be prepared for poor quality, poorly lit and blurred photographs.

If your budget dictates that this is your only option, give your guests some guide lines.  Perhaps give each table a part of the event to photograph.  You can base this on the seating arrangements.  Those placed most appropriately to get the best shots of a particular aspect of the wedding to take those photos.  For example, if they are are at a great angle and close enough to the bride and groom to take those shots, if they are best situated to take photos of the first dance, to take those shots and so on.

You may also have to consider health issues such as epilepsy and seat guests away from the source of the flash photography.

Where possible try to use a professional photographer who has plenty of experience in wedding photography.  Your memories rest with the person.  You need your lifetime memories to be in safe and experienced hands.

If you decide to find a photographer it is never too early to start looking.  Good photographers can be booked up 2 or 3 years in advance.  If you can get a personal recommendation from a previous client that is a great way to start!

You need to be sure that they can live up to your expectations of what a wedding photographer can do for you.  A good photographer will make the most of capturing those special moments and may also photograph some wonderful memories that you were not expecting, too.

Check their credentials, ask for references and follow up by contacting the referees.  Look at examples of their wedding photography work.

Ask prospective photographers questions such as their availability and charges, making sure there are no hidden extras.  Check that the photographer can give you exactly the photography package you want.  Don’t be talked into a package only to regret it later.  Your wedding is very personal to you so the photographs and the provided package should cater to your wishes.

Ask if they will be taking the photographs themselves or sending someone in their name or working with someone else on the day. Try to meet your prospective photographer as soon as possible.  This gives you time to continue the search if they do not meet your expectations.  They need to share your vision of your special day so that the photos you receive are everything you expect.  If you are able to have a good rapport with your photographer you will feel more at ease when stood in front of their camera lens and this will show in the all important photographs.

Questions to ask your photographer.

This is a list to get you started on your quest to find the right photographer to record your wonderful wedding memories.

How thorough is the contract?  Does it cover all the things that are of importance to you?
